Functionality of couplings
Couplings are used for rigid, flexible, movable or detachable connection of two shafts. In contrast to gearboxes, couplings can transmit torques and speeds, but cannot convert or generate them.
Couplings are machine elements and are used to connect two shafts. Depending on the application of the couplings, various attributes are decisive for the selection: rigid, flexible, mobile, fail-safe or detachable.
Couplings are also used to dampen vibrations, to compensate for misalignment between the shafts and to limit the maximum permissible torque (torque limiter - to protect the components in the drive train).
