Rating: Specifically seaworthy!
KTR couplings are on the high seas all over the world and are used in various applications for marine technology: in main and auxiliary drives and every kind of deck equipment. All our couplings are type approved and certified in accordance with the strict standards of Germanischer Lloyd (GL), American Bureau of Shipping (ABS), Det Norske Veritas (DNV) and Bureau Veritas (BV) and are approved to DIN EN 10204 standard.
Full thrust with water jet drives
It doesn’t matter if you are in a speedboat, life-boat, ferry or a customs boat, more and more vessels use water jet drives. To transmit the torque there is no better coupling than the double-cardanic, torsionally stiff RADEX®-N Composite coupling compensating for very high displacements with only low restoring forces. The driving shaft and the impellor are connected by a CFK spacer. It accepts considerably higher shaft distance dimensions than the usual steel tubes whilst being lower in weight, accepting higher loads and is maintenance-free.
Full manoeuvrability for steering drives
Bow thrusters, rear rudders and transverse rudders require couplings, that dampen torsional vibrations, such as ROTEX®. Thanks to its compact design it is easy to assemble and operate. This type of coupling functions without any maintenance. ROTEX® compensates for axial, radial and angular displacements, increasing the service life of the entire drive system. Its damping effect can be controlled by the Shore hardness of the elastomer spider: a hard elastomer is used for high torques, a softer one is used for higher damping effects.
In azimuth drives you can protect the gearbox against torque shocks by using ROTEX® in combination with the KTR-SI overload system or the backlash-free ROTEX® GS in combination with KTR-SI Compact.
You can keep vessels, whose rudder has a shaft diameter exceeding 600 mm, on course by using the positive-locking shaft-hub-connection CLAMPEX® clamping sets.
Power and safety on board
Wherever there is anything that needs to be moved whilst at sea, KTR couplings are involved. On winches and cranes ROTEX® are often used, on hydraulic power packs in combination with I. C.-engines flange couplings BoWex-ELASTIC® and BoWex® FLE-PA, on pumps and compressors ROTEX® or POLY-NORM® or the torsionally stiff steel lamina couplings RADEX®-N or RIGIFLEX®-N.
Components for reliable On- board hydraulics
ROTEX® is used in numerous hydraulic power packs on board as well inside the vessel. Its easy plug-in procedure is of benefit during assembly used in conjunction with a KTR Bellhousing. New Bellhousings produced from cast iron are suitable for marine applications, withstanding the aggressive seawater in the long term. Additionally, we are pleased to supply all other hydraulic components such as oil tanks etc. Everything is available from one single source and is fully compatible for such harsh working envioments.
Perfect thermo management for marine hydraulics
There’s a lot of trouble on the high seas. That is why hydraulic plants need to be cooled reliably. Subject to the marine ambient conditions conventional cooling plants cannot be used in these cases. That is why KTR offer oil-air as well as oil-water coolers being resistant to aggressive seawater.
The compact OAC oi-air coolers for high-power cooling of hydraulic fluids and lubricants are coated with a corrosion-resistant KTL dipping paint for marine applications. They protect the cooler reliably against oxidation, even in the area between the laminas which is difficult to enter. In addition electric motors of protection class IP 56 are used.
Even higher are the demands on TAK/T oil-water coolers cooling with highly aggressive salt water. For these applications we use permanently seawater-resistant materials: for example 70/30 copper/nickel pipes in combination with 90/10 copper/nickel baffle plates. The steering column jacket consists of light-weight aluminium extruded section or is available as a steel design as an alternative. The head pieces being in direct contact with seawater are manufactured from saltwater-resistant red bronze.

Success is a „question of selection“
KTR do not only provide you with all components from one single source, KTR also offer additional support via our online selection program for couplings and hydraulic components this also includes selections for coolers. For further information please order our industry catalogue “Couplings for marine technology” this is also available as a PDF download via the KTR Web Site. Alternatively please contact us directly – we will be more than pleased to discuss with you the selection and design of a suitable coupling/ hydraulic components for your applications.
KTR develop new applications in marine technology continuously. Simply contact us and we will design the right coupling!
